The brothers Reimar and Walter Horten were among the best known designers of flying wing aircraft in Germany until the end of the Second World War. They had brought their experience in this sector to a special unit which, as Sonderkommando 9, was responsible for the further development of flying wing aircraft. Development of the aircraft, known as the Horten Ho IX, equipped with two BMW 003A-1 jet engines, began in 1942. While the first aircraft could only be completed as a glider due to problems with the jet engine, the second prototype was given the Jumo 004B-1 as its engine. In 1944 the V2 made its first flight and reached speeds of over 780 km/h. Series production of the Horten was transferred to the Gothaer Waggonfabrik and the type designation was changed to Go 229. The first aircraft from the Gothaer Waggonfabrik, the Go 229 AO V3, was given the Jumo 004C engines.
