One of the most unorthodox novels of modern times, The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the shocking story of the vagabond Dorian who, captivated by the exquisitely beautiful portrait of him by painter Basil Holward, sells his soul in exchange for eternal youth and eternal beauty. Under the influence of his friend, Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian will indulge in a debauched lifestyle which he keeps hidden from high society in whose eyes he remains a gentleman. The portrait, in contrast to its impeccable presentation, bears the signs of wear and tear. The allusions to the hero's unforgivable sins caused a scandal when the book was first published in 1891 – the book was used as evidence at the trial of Oscar Wilde in 1895. Of course, the British critics of the time did not give this work a warm reception either, if and the words of its author, “Leave my book, please, to immortality he deserves', proved rather prophetic. Today, more than a hundred years have passed since it was first published, Oscar Wilde's Faustian tale of moral decay still fascinates.
