Giving and receiving is perhaps the most human thing, but also the closest to divine nature.
This is what the Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca argues in his longest and most detailed ethical treatise De Beneficiis.
James Romm, excellently translating the main points of the work, conveys the essence of Seneca's position, that generosity and gratitude are among the most important virtues.

For Seneca, the impulse to give to others is the very foundation of society, without it we are pitiful beings, worse than wild animals.
But the generosity didn't happen by accident. Seneca sees it as part of our desire to be like the gods, who, creating the earth and the sky, gave us the greatest gift.

Seneca's thought, full of deep humanism, can be a valuable source of inspiration for a life of more solidarity and giving, as it reminds us that being generous is not just good, it is pleasant.
