The history of the Greeks travels through time on the ship called the Greek language. Seamanship and language have over time shaped the characteristics of this restless people whose traces can be traced deep into the past, some 4,000 years ago.
The Greeks played a pivotal role in ancient times in the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Their language became a learning tool as well as a communication tool for many peoples of the wider region, as well as, later, for the emerging Christianity. With civilization, they "defeated" the Eastern Roman Empire, turning it into a Byzantine one, and kept themselves spiritually alert during the Turkish occupation. With their revolution, in 1821, they acquired the first independent national state of the eastern Mediterranean, connected themselves with the Western world, extended their borders and took their place among the peoples of modern Europe - and the world.
In this book, through the discussions of History professor Maria Efthimiou with Makis Provatas, Hellenism is approached from its beginnings until today, the roots, foundations and milestones of its history are traced.
Behind dates and events are times and places of far greater significance. There are key figures and events that are not always the obvious ones.
"Prosexis", according to Plato, is the effort of the soul to learn. This book was written with deep care.
