"I will forever be ignorant of how she spent her days, where she hid, who she was with during the winter months of her first escape and the few weeks in the spring when she escaped again. That is her secret. A small and precious secret that the executioners, the warrants, the so-called Occupation Authorities, the Depot, the barracks, the camps, History, time - everything that stains you and wear and tear - they won't be able to steal it from her." (Patrick Montiano)
"Dora Bruder" is a fascinating and deeply personal work. Memory plays a dominant role in this and Paris presents a melancholic atmosphere.
It all starts with a search ad. A fifteen-year-old girl escapes from boarding school. Her parents place an ad in a Paris newspaper on December 31, 1941, in perhaps the darkest period of the Occupation in France. This ad, which Montiano reads by chance in 1989, becomes an obsessive idea for him, a motivation to rescue the girl from oblivion, but also a stimulus to reveal many aspects of his own life.
