"If he could give a picture of the future, he would present a society of animals freed from the fear of hunger and filth, where all would be equal, where each would work according to his ability, where the strong would protect the impossible... Instead of all this - without even finding why - they reached the point of not daring to speak their mind, of seeing wild dogs roaming menacingly everywhere and their companions being torn to pieces after first confessing terrible crimes" .

The animals of a farm react to the mistreatment and proceed to occupy the farm; they plan to create a paradise of justice, progress and equality. Thus begins the most famous political allegory of the 20th century which tells the story of a revolution against tyranny gone wrong - leading to a miserable and terrifying totalitarian regime.
Animal Farm read as a commentary on the Stalinist Soviet Union and remains relevant: a penetrating satire of corrupting power and totalitarian practices.

"If freedom has any meaning, it is to be able to tell citizens what they don't want to hear." George Orwell. "Freedom of the Press", 1943 (from the epitome of the publication)

“I attempted to analyze Marx's theory from the point of view of... animals. With this thought as a starting point, it was no longer difficult to edit the story." George Orwell, "Foreword to the Ukrainian Edition", 1947 (from the epitome of the edition)

"In the Farm, oppression and authoritarianism, hegemony and the totalitarian element become fictional images of themselves. The post-war world, in search of a new morality, as well as new codes of political understanding, needed a fiction that questioned the inevitability of oppression as an element of historical development. The timeless influence and resonance of Animal Farm is obviously due to this reason as well... The story that Orwell tells does not only reflect the author's political acumen; it is also one of the fundamental allegories of our time." Malcolm Bradbury (from the publication's introduction)
