Virginia Woolf conceived and wrote her minor masterpiece, Mrs. Dalloway, from 1922 to 1924, having first read James Joyce's Ulysses and after returning from leafy Richmond to Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury. Like Ulysses , Woolf's novel takes place in one day, but it is equivalent to diving into the heart of things. A thousand things.
