If you came to Earth

If you were coming to Earth, I'd like you to know that...
We live in different places.
We live in different houses.
We live in different families.
Each of us is different.
You will find us near a big sun and a small moon.
And we all share this blue-green planet together.
He's the only one we have, so we'll have to take care of him.

A child's letter to an alien about planet and man. “The idea for this book sprung from the top of a Himalayan mountain in Bhutan. I was working with Save the Children at the time and I was walking up a winding path to get to a small school with two classrooms and ten students. We couldn't understand a word each other was saying, but the kids took pictures of me and shared their meal while I showed them some books. I've made books about boars and babies and bears and lighthouses, but what I wanted at that moment was a book that would bring us together. A book about their house and mine. I would have wanted the same book when I was with children in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, India and Singapore, and Brooklyn, New York. And so, I decided to make such a book, but I would need a lot of help. Every person in the book belongs to a real person. Color names were suggested by people on Instagram. The kids in Brooklyn spent hours telling me what it means to be human, what they love most about our planet, and what they think an alien would like to eat. The book is a subjective description of the world through the eyes of a child. Fresh, curious eyes. I wanted kids and adults to be able to read the book in ten minutes, but also go back and spend ten minutes on each page.” -Sophie Blackall
